Mariah

Mariah

Until the age of 5 and a half months Mari had been a perfectly healthy puppy. First problems appeared on the way back from the walk, Mari was limping. A vet carried out an x-ray examination of rear limbs which showed bones and joints without any problem. So the possible cause of the limping could have been a muscle or tissue pain and so it could have better itself.

Unfortunately, it didn´t and Mari´s condition was getting worse. The next x-ray exposed signs of heavy dysplasy on the right hip joint while the left one was still all right.

To keep the chances for at least a bit normal life of our Mari (even all the longings for the breeding and sport future were already gone), we decided for a surgery. Mervi and Johanna booked Mari to the best Finish orthopaedist Dr. Jan Räiha on December 7, 2007. Mr. Räiha received all the necessary records and x-ray photographs and figured out that the right hip joint could be operated and thus gain back the motility. Mariah was ordered to rest but in spite of not moving almost at all, her condition worsen rapidly and on Friday she couldn´t stand on her right leg at all.

On the arrival to Mr. Räiha´s clinic a third x-ray examination was carried out. The photographs unfortunately showed extraordinarily acute development of the disease. The right joint was fully luxed, moreover the left joint (so far clear and without any damage) was heavily subluxed too. Destruction of pelvis and joint socket advanced rapidly as well. There was no chance to save Mari´s life.

Mari was put to sleep on Friday, December 7, 2007 at the age of only 6 months and 13 days. Mari will always stay in our hearts.

Naturally, I was dashed by whole this situation but I started to search the information. According to the available sources, such acutely progressive development of dysplasy symptoms is not common for a hip dysplasy as we know it in dogs.  The veterinarian Dr. Ekr who was my consultant here in the Czech republic and who saw documentation told me this was not a typical case of a dysplasy but an "acute" dysplasy where failure of all joint development mechanisms (muscles, sinews, tissue…) occurs in a short time. Few similar cases he observed in a breed of Chodský pes and he doesn´t assume that Mariah´s case means a higher risk for her littermates. We all hope so.

If anybody knows anything about a similar case or about a dysplasy in that blood line, please, contact us! Any information can be very helpful.
